“Teaching Oral Disease Prevention. 7 of 12” is the seventh in a series of twelve Teaching Oral Disease Prevention Amazon Kindle, eBooks written by retired dentist Dr. Garth Pettit, Author, Oral Health Care Educator to fulfill a mission he began in 1996, Prevent Oral Diseases in Children.

The author’s research led him to put the oral hygiene instruction Brush Your Teeth to a SWOT analysis which indicated the instruction does not clean the entire mouth of unwanted debris, nor leave the whole mouth protected against oral diseases and therefore could be a cause of oral diseases. He created the instruction, Treat Your Mouth, later changed the name to Treat Your Whole Mouth and more recently changed it to Paint Your Mouth....because children became thrilled and excited by the thought and wanted to ‘paint your mouth’.

Each of these eBooks is an oral health care education resource children themselves can read and understand but preferably teaching oral health and teaching oral disease prevention is best achieved with supervision by parents and, or educators.

In this seventh eBook of the twelve book series this is what children will learn:

The topic here is "lurkeez and nasteez" and this lesson provides details on how the composition of plaque is changed by bacteria breaking down complex chemical compounds into possibly harmful substances.

If this sounds too complex for a child, keep in mind the always-child-friendly format of GarGar The Dentist, which uses a blend of fanciful, now-familiar cartoon animal drawings and clear chatty text to teach even the most complex of dental concepts.

Kids learn that 'lurkeez' live naturally inside the mouth and that lurkeez bacteria in plaque are the big problem. Plaque lurkeez are unaffected by healthy saliva washes and can build up quickly after every meal, leading to the development of nasty Stix (already presented in a prior lesson) a bad situation indeed.

The focus on explaining lurkeez and nasteez is reinforced by color drawings explaining their process, then accompanied by the sections inviting kids to color their own understanding of the process, a quiz section, and reinforcing questions on GarGar's entire 'painting the mouth' process.

Again: stamps, a Certificate of Achievement, and 'lifetime tips' reinforce past and present lessons and provide a unified focus.

“Teaching Oral Disease Prevention. 7 of 12” is another fun-filled lesson for children’s oral health education and oral disease prevention.

Australian Dental Association SA president Dr. Angela Pierce stated “The best investment anyone can make in oral health is in teaching and prevention….early intervention will lead to a generation of children who won’t be as reliant on dental care in the future.” Dr. Pierce after reviewing the Teaching Oral Disease Prevention eBook series stated: “…truly impressed with your fortitude and devotion to this worthy cause.”
