“Teaching Oral Disease Prevention. 4 of 12” is the fourth in a series of twelve Teaching Oral Disease Prevention Amazon Kindle, eBooks written by retired dentist Dr. Garth Pettit, Author, Oral Health Care Educator to fulfill a mission he began in 1996, Prevent Oral Diseases in Children.

The author’s research led him to put the oral hygiene instruction Brush Your Teeth to a SWOT analysis which indicated the instruction does not clean the entire mouth of unwanted debris, nor leave the whole mouth protected against oral diseases and therefore could be a cause of oral diseases. He created the instruction, Treat Your Mouth, later changed the name to Treat Your Whole Mouth and more recently changed it to Paint Your Mouth....because children became thrilled and excited by the thought and wanted to ‘paint your mouth’.

Each of these eBooks is an oral health care education resource children themselves can read and understand but preferably teaching oral health and teaching oral disease prevention is best achieved with supervision by parents and, or educators.

In this fourth eBook of the twelve book series this is what children will learn:

Lesson 2 extends information begun in Oral Health Lesson 1, narrowing the focus to cover more ingredients and nutritional information to be found on product labels.

Kids are invited to examine labels on bottles, jars, tins, packets and all kids of containers of foods and drinks, and to identify the names of contents which could be either harmful, helpful or harmless to oral hygiene efforts.

Ingredients searches are divided into breakfast, lunch and dinner and adopt a fun method of examining ingredients and understanding their oral health impact.

Drawings of different common foods for breakfast, lunch and dinner accompany further details on non-foods that can be bad to put in the mouth, such as sticky fingers or dirty toys.

Discussions of helpful ingredients such as fluoride and mouth care aids versus sugars and acidic foods like lemon juice are included along with examples of harmless ingredients.

The fun and exercise section encourages kids to keep track of how many harmful, helpful or harmless ingredients they've encountered during the day, offering the reinforcement of questions, drawing projects, and 'painting your mouth' questions. Correctly answering questions allows for another Certificate of Achievement to be assigned.
